Silver Haired Legislature
The Silver
Haired Legislature is an elected body, made up of citizens who
are 60 years of age or over, which promotes conscientious
legislative advocacy for Missouri’s older adults.
There are
three Senators and twelve Representatives, elected from the
18-county area. There are four Representatives and one Senator
from each of the three Regional Areas--Northwest, ABCD and Green
Hills regions.
The elected
Northwest Missouri Senators and Representatives meet in June of
each year and go through the process of determining potential
legislative bills that would benefit Northwest Missourians.
Those
selected bills are then combined with the other nine Missouri
Area Agency on Aging bills that have been determined to be
beneficial for their respective areas. All 30 Senators and 120
Representatives from across the state meet for two days in the
fall and conduct a model legislative session. At that time,
members actually sit in the Senate and House chambers, where
they debate and vote on previously-selected legislation and
resolutions.
From the
docket, five bills are chosen as priority pieces of legislation
to be advocated for during the following legislative year, in
the real Missouri General Assembly.
Silver
Haired Delegates receive mileage reimbursement, per diem meal
and lodging expense in conjunction with Silver Haired
Legislature (SHL) functions.
